Onboard sound is a good start if you're just using headphones, and then you can move to dedicated DACs, Interfaces, and Amplifiers over time as needed. It really depends on the audio setup you're going for. The 4080 is also an option on some Intel H670/Z690 boards, this is actually just a USB version of the 1220. The Realtek 1220 series audio is the premium alternative. The Realtek 890 (887-892) is a staple of $60-$100 motherboards, as well as some premium boards like MSI's B450 Tomahawk and B550 A-Pro. If you want to go Intel which I would recommend, many B660, H670, and Z690 boards have the headers.Īll motherboards have integrated sound cards. If you want to go AMD, every Asus B550 ATX motherboard has Thunderbolt headers that can be used for Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 upgrades. I would recommend a motherboard that at least has a Thunderbolt header so you can install a Thunderbolt card in the future if you ever need it. Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 are inter-compatible. Newer interfaces are starting to use Thunderbolt and it's possible future instruments will also use it.
